Blogs /Articles / Interviews

I studied Communications and then Digital Communications for my Undergraduate and Masters Degree, so have written my fair share of articles, essays and blogs over the span of five years. Topics surround all things media, socials and much more, so I wanted to create a page where I could write what was on my mind - whether it is sports or lifestyle based, this page will cover a wide range of subjects!

'Taking Time Out' Reflection For Medium

"Tennis is a very individual sport. Transitioning to professional tennis, where you have to travel to countries by yourself week in and week out can be brutal — especially at the lower levels of the professional tour. At the lower levels, you are making a loss financially, staying in some questionable places, managing equipment, and advertising for sponsorship on social media — all whilst planning travel/flights and tournament schedules for the upcoming weeks (and much more). Unfortunately for myself, I only got three weeks on the tour in Bulgaria and Italy before I sustained a lower back injury and was ruled out for a couple of months."

Osaka Outside the Lines: Creating Change in Tennis, Media and Activism

My Final Master's Thesis

"Sport and media have been synonymous with each other since they both originated. The ability for people to create commentary surrounding a match, tournament, or athlete has always—and will always—be around in a society that thrives off creating a buzz of the sporting world and its characters. This project looks at the current landscape of what it means to be a tennis player and what it means to represent yourself in the media. More specifically, we are concerned with the relationship between activism in the sports media and athletes, centering around Naomi Osaka. Osaka, the 23-year-old tennis player and superstar, was born in Japan and thrown into the limelight after her win at the 2018 U.S. Open, where she defeated arguably the most famous tennis player in the world, Serena Williams."

'Get To Know' Interview

Interviewed by Anne-Marie Batson

"Here's my 'Getting to Know' vodcast - a series of Zoom interviews with sportspeople. Meet Holly Hutchinson, studying and training at Old Dominion University in Virginia, USA. She tells me how she felt about her tennis season-ending abruptly, coming from a sporting family (Dad is a former cricket pro, tennis coach Mum and sister is an aspiring tennis player) and what is the one thing she is working on right now."
